Moundridge Manor soars in Give Back Kansas Challenge
MOUNDRIDGE, Kan. — In a weeks-long race with 9 other Kansas businesses, Moundridge Manor gave more than 1,700 hours in the 2022 Give Back Kansas Challenge. In its second year, the Challenge is an 8-week program that engages Kansans in employer-supported volunteering, both during and outside of the workday. The Kansas Volunteer Commission and Volunteer Kansas administer the program together.
Volunteer Coordinator Billy Holdeman-Bass says the challenge was more than just getting the Manor involved in the community. “When I learned about this opportunity I saw it as a small way the Manor could cooperate with others to help serve our neighbors, both nearby and far off. I never suspected the immense participation we saw, especially from our residents! When we initially announced the program we weren’t planning on engaging resident participation, but many of them approached me and asked if they could join in. With permission from Volunteer Kansas, we were glad to include them. They really made the difference for our numbers.”
The home’s residents were the most involved participants and gave the Manor the competitive edge to be the largest contributor to the challenge. Melvin Yoder, a resident at the Manor, logged the most hours with his gospel tract packing project.
“This was the best activity we have had here. It was something I could participate in. I am not always able to join in what’s happening, so it was good to have this. I am excited for next year!”
Another resident, Mary Renno, decided to use the momentum of a challenge to help her complete a quilt she was piecing. “I love quilting. I prefer it over making dresses”, she said.
“I was working on this quilt, but hadn’t made significant progress. When I heard about the challenge, why, I just had to get working so I could log the hours!”
Some projects accomplished in this challenge were:
- Completion of a hand-pieced quilt topper for giving
- Packing tracts for distribution in several languages
- Sorting several loads of laundry, saving many payroll dollars
- Blood donation
- Collection of supplies for Mennonite Central Committee hygiene kits to be sent to Ukraine
- and more!
